Laparascopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery also known as as minimally invasive surgery is a surgical procedures along with a video camera and some thin tools. The surgical procedure involves making vey small incisions up to a half inch. Additionally, plastic tubes known as ports are inserted through these incisions. The video and the tools are then placed into the ports which permit passage to the interior organs of the patient.
The video camera then displays an image of the organs within the abdomen to a monitor. The laparascopic surgeon cannot directly view the patient's insides without a standard large incision. Thus, the video camera is the eyes for the surgeon during laparoscopy surgery. Since the surgeon uses the image from the video camera positioned inside the patient's body to perform the procedure.
Advantages of laparoscopic surgery are
- minor post operative discomfort since incisions are much smaller
- faster recovery time
- short hospital stays
- early return to full activities
- small scars
- possible less internal scarringwhen the laparascopic procedure is done in way that is minimally invasive versus traditional surgery.
