There are various forms of weight loss surgery on hand to a patient now including the popular new medical practice of gastric lap banding, which is quickly becoming the preferred choice for many overweight or unhealthy obese people.
It is generally thought that people seriously thinking of weight loss surgery are basically overweight and as a consequence many forget that people who are enormously overweight are frequently in pain from other conditions, some of which are a direct result because they are overweight. It is the presence of these additional problems that commonly becomes an obstacle when selecting a type of surgery.
Gastric lap banding is a type of restrictive surgery in which the stomach is physically limited in the amount of food that can be passed through the stomach and digestive tract, this means that this type of surgery is probably not going to be appropriate if your esophagus, stomach or intestine are abnormal.
Problems within the stomach or esophagus that could cause bleeding (such as a dilated vein or esophageal) also mean no gastric lap banding. In addition, if you\'ve had an injury, scarring, inflammation, ulcers, esophagitis or Crohn's disease or stomach perforation it could mean complications.
Finally, lap band surgery is not appropriate for pregnant women or if a woman is considering rearing children. If the pregnancy is to occur after lap band surgery the band may be deflated to permit for the greater nutritional neccesity but, if loosening the band does not do the job, the lap band may need to be taken out.
One advantage of the lap band surgery is that the procedure is reversible and, if it is needed, the band can be removed from the stomach and return it to its earlier state. Will power is significant to any type of weight loss surgery but becomes a more significant issue when considering lap band surgery.
